Welcome Aboard! Why We Started Peace Train Parents
Every parent has stood in the kitchen at 6pm, referee-whistle in hand, trying to talk two small humans down from starting World War III over a transgression involving a plastic dinosaur. In that moment, “teach my child to be a peacemaker” can feel less like a value and more like the punchline.
We get it. That’s exactly why this blog exists.
Peace Isn’t the Absence of Conflict
The biggest myth about raising peaceful kids is that it means raising kids who never fight, never get angry, never melt down and yell “that’s not fair!” at top volume in the cereal aisle….cause we all love that.
That’s not it at all.
Conflict is normal. Big feelings are normal. What we’re after isn’t a house with no arguments — it’s kids who grow up knowing how to move through conflict without resorting to violence, contempt, or shutting down. That’s a skill, not a personality trait, and like any skill, it can be taught, modeled, and practiced — starting as early as toddlerhood.
What “Pacifist Principles” Actually Means Here
When we say we’re raising kids on pacifist principles, we don’t mean a strict political stance or a moral rulebook. We mean a handful of practical commitments:
• Words before fists, always. Even when the words are just “I’m mad!”
• Every person’s feelings are real and worth naming — yours, your child’s, and the sibling who just got hit with the dinosaur.
• Repair matters more than punishment. A forced “sorry” teaches nothing; a genuine repair teaches everything about real-world conflict.
• Empathy is a muscle. The more we ask “how do you think she felt?” the stronger it gets.
• Peace is something we practice, not something we’re born knowing. Peace is, as the great Thich Nhat Hanh once said, every step.
These ideas show up across almost every wisdom tradition and secular parenting philosophy out there — you don’t need a specific religious or political identity to raise a peacemaker. You just need some tools and a whole lot of patience.
What You’ll Find Here
This blog is the adult companion to Peace Train Kids, a show we’re producing for preschoolers that teaches these same ideas through songs, characters, and stories. Each week here, we’ll go deeper into the how by examining:
• Scripts and language for coaching kids through conflict in the moment
• Age-appropriate ways to talk about anger, fairness, and forgiveness
• Book and activity recommendations
• “Ask the Conductor” — a column answering your real parenting questions
You don’t have to have it all figured out. Neither do we.
We’re building this train car by car, right alongside you.
All aboard.
